MDF - What is it and why is it used?
MDF is an engineered wood product made fromwood fibers mixed with resins. It offers
excellent stability and durability and is a very good material for painted finishes. MDF can
also be an economical answer for complex door designs.
MDF doors allow you to create virtually any design that can be imagined and are available in a variety of options
to create that one-of-a-kind look for any home. They may be manufactured using a variety of methods including
traditional stile and rail construction, solid MDF construction or by using a layered MDF construction. Irrespective
of the method of manufacturing, there are many options to choose the right product for the job.
Stile and rail MDF doors are constructed using components made of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and
assembled in a similar fashion as a standard wood interior door. A solid MDF door is made from a solid one-
piece wood composite panel and offers virtually any design option you can imagine. Standard MDF doors
manufactured using an automated CNC router offer a more limited number of designs and may be more
competitively priced but do not have the architectural detail of the other methods of manufacturing.
